Fewer coasting schools in the North than in any other region
The lowest number of coasting schools are recorded in the North of England, according to a new ‘Guide to Regional Schools Commissioners’ published by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER).
Their data shows that the North also has one of the lowest numbers of sponsored and converter academies, as well as free schools, studio schools and UTCs, at both primary and secondary level.
The forecasted pupil numbers are also at very low levels in the North, with only 6% in primary schools and 2% (the lowest nationally) in secondary schools by 2018/19.
The RSC guide comes as the Education Select Committee publishes written evidence on the role of Regional School Commissioners, as part of their inquiry into the impact they have had in their first year and whether there are enough commissioners to fulfil their obligations.
