Endeavour Academy win citizenship award

Endeavour Academy in Durham have been recognised at the Association for Citizenship Teaching (ACT) Awards for their students’ outstanding research into children’s mental health.

ACT Awards

On Thursday 29 June, at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society ACT hosted their second annual Citizenship Teaching Awards. The evening paid tribute to the many teachers and schools who work tirelessly to provide excellent Citizenship education.

They received many nominations across the 11 different categories, highlighting the outstanding contribution of Citizenship teachers, school leaders and organisations from across the UK. This year, Special Recognition Awards were also included as part of the celebration, marking the contribution of four individuals who had made significant contributions to citizenship education over many years through academic research, Citizenship teaching, advocacy and influence, and for services to ACT.

Endeavour Academy’s success

As part of the GCSE Citizenship Programme, students at Endeavour Academy carried out extensive research into children’s mental health and identified there is a dearth of mental health training on Initial Teacher Training Programmes.  Students campaigned for all trainee teachers to complete the Level 2 Children and Young People Mental Health Award as part of their Initial Teacher Training programme.  Students received a really positive response to their campaign from Sunderland University who were very receptive to the idea and congratulated the students on their initiative.

Director of Schools North East, Chris Zarraga, commented:

“The students from Endeavour Academy should be extremely proud of themselves as this award is recognition of their hard work. Their research study around children’s mental health is an important topic and could make a real difference for many schools in our region and beyond.”
