Celebrating a bright future for Monkseaton Middle School
We first reported in September that Monkseaton Middle School in North Tyneside faced an uncertain future, and today we are absolutely delighted to share fantastic news: instead of potential closure, plans to expand the school’s year groups from 5–8 to 5–11 have been formally approved by North Tyneside Council!
This means pupils will now have the opportunity to stay at the school all the way through to age 16, with Year 9 joining in 2027, followed by Years 10 and 11.
A school beloved by families
Monkseaton Middle School has long been admired by parents and pupils alike for its welcoming, inclusive environment and high-quality teaching. The phased expansion plan is designed to allow gradual growth, provide a balanced Key Stage 4 curriculum, and enable pupils to remain in the school until they complete their GCSEs.
The decision was met with applause at the council meeting, reflecting the relief and joy felt by families and staff alike.
Community support and determination
Back in October 2025, Monkseaton Middle was one of several schools in North Tyneside considered for closure, with low birth rates, surplus places, and budget pressures cited as reasons. The news sparked a strong community response: a petition to save the school gathered over 1,200 signatures, and more than £5,700 was raised via GoFundMe to support a campaign to retain the school.
Head Teacher Kirsty Nichols-Mackay paid tribute to the school community, saying: “We are absolutely delighted by this decision. I want to thank our families for their incredible support, our Governing Body for their unwavering dedication, and our staff whose commitment to our pupils underpins everything we do. Extending our age range allows us to continue providing the smaller, personal setting that makes Monkseaton Middle so special, while giving families real choice and pupils the opportunity to stay in an inclusive environment through to age 16.”
Looking ahead
The school will now begin preparing for the phased introduction of Year 9 and Key Stage 4, with the new age range taking effect from September 2027. With a strengthened curriculum and the continued dedication of staff and families, Monkseaton Middle is set for an exciting and secure future.
