Two multi-academy trusts are merging to create “a powerful force for good for education in the North East.” Northern Lights Learning Trust and Dayspring Trust combined on February 1st and will comprise seven schools and 3,093 children and young people, from the ages of two to 16.

A Sunderland primary school is singing from the rafters after winning the Sunderland Music Mark award for the second time. St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, was awarded the honour from Sunderland Music Hub in recognition of its“commitment to providing a high-quality music education for all children and young people”.
The Healthy MindED Commission, powered by Schools North East, published The Voice of the Pupil: Understanding Mental Health in Schools in December 2022. This unique study, described by Commission Chair Professor Dame Sue Bailey as ‘unique’ and ‘representing the most important body of evidence about children’s own views about their mental health, wellbeing, and resilience ever carried out in the UK’, offers educators a new way to approach students’ mental health and properly understand the needs of young people in their schools.
A student from Galley Hill Primary School in Guisborough has published her own book at the age of seven. Sienna McLaren, currently in year three created the book, including the illustrations to raise money for charity.
The first education questions of 2023 took place this week in the House of Commons. The Shadow Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, began by asking about school buildings, and those at risk of collapsing.
A South Tyneside primary school has won an award for improving the physical and mental health of the staff. St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, has been awarded the Better Health at Work Bronze Award.

The Bank of England launched their new classroom resource for GCSE students at the Schools North East Annual Summit on Thursday. The resource is based on its successful economics book ‘Can’t We Just Print More Money?’.
