This week, Schools North East has been reaching out to the region’s schools to offer our thanks for the amazing work we have seen this year. Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, sent the following message to all North East school staff in recognition of their superb performance throughout one of the most difficult years schools have seen to date:

Sunderland based Town End Associate Research School (TEARS) has been designated by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) as a full research school from September 2023.

This week, schools from the 29 schools within the Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, a Schools North East Partner Trust, gathered at the iconic Durham Cathedral to perform Footsteps into Paradise.

Academy 360, in Sunderland, celebrated this week after recently receiving an Ofsted grade of ‘good’, an amazing result over its previous rating of ‘inadequate’ in 2016.

Over a quarter of North East schools upgraded in post-Covid inspections 

Schools in the North East were invited to sing in a number of locations in Newcastle City Centre last week to take part in the Newcastle Sings Schools’ Festival Day.

Pupils at South Hylton held their very own Pride Day to celebrate diversity, difference and promote understanding.

We live in interesting political times.  Amidst all of the turbulence this week in Westminster, a new Secretary of State for Education was briefly appointed after Nadhim Zahawi’s promotion to Chancellor. Michelle Donelan, who was previously the universities minister became the third Education Secretary this academic year.  But her tenure lasted a short time, resigning after less than three days.

Students at Seaton Sluice Middle School have had their hard work celebrated by the school at their ‘Press Celebration’, last week.

MPs held a Westminster Hall debate on Monday, considering a petition relating to the school week. The petition required schools to make Friday a part of the school weekend, arguing that children can have lots of stress at school due to exams and homework and with a 3 day weekend, children could have a longer time to relax. The petition received nearly 150,000 signatures.

Pupils at Rosa Street Primary School in Spennymoor took part in a ‘Careers Day’ recently where their eyes were opened to a variety of potential options for their futures.
