Bright Futures Beckon for Conyers Students After Results Success
Top grades proved to be just what the doctor ordered for a student wanting to study medicine at university.
Student at Conyers School and Sixth Form College, Yarm, Lois Hudson-Foster achieved A*AB in biology, chemistry and English literature to secure a place to read medicine at Leeds University.
Her achievement is a vital next step to fulfilling her dream to one day work for Médecins Sans Frontières, a charity that provides humanitarian medical care in conflict zones and in countries affected by endemic diseases.
“I always loved science and talking to people,” said the 18-year-old, of Yarm, who works at Teesside Hospice on weekends.
“I looked at all sorts of health care and want something that is hands on with the patients. I’d like to work abroad and it would be amazing to work for Doctors Without Borders.
“I live with my nan who is very sociable. She always has people round and I enjoy listening to their life stories. So I’d like to be a doctor so I could listen and help people.”
A STUDENT who never missed a day of school since nursery collected his grades giving his future a clean bill of health.
Conyers student Ned Parker will now read maths at Newcastle University after studying maths, physics and PE.
“My parents were both teachers so were never keen to let me have a day off,” recalled the 18-year-old, of Yarm, who plays squash, cricket and golf. “I remember one day in Year 10 feeling ill and just lying down in the dugout during PE but still didn’t go home.”
A TALENTED footballer is setting his next goals after collecting his A level results.
Conyers student Seb Waller will now read economics at Newcastle University after studying maths, economics and PE.
The 18-year-old footballer, of Ingleby Barwick, hopes to follow in the footsteps of his granddad one day by having his own business.
But as a talented centre back, who was Young Player of the Year last season, he has just signed for Billingham Synthonia FC, who play in the Northern League.
He said: “I love football but have always been interested in making money and might look into wealth management and investments.”
YOUNG chemist Hanna Dabbous will continue to explore life at the molecular level after gaining the grades to go to Durham University.
The Conyers School 18-year-old, of Yarm, achieved A*A*A in maths, chemistry and physics and will now read chemistry at Durham University, which she has been liaising with since Year 12.
“I have always liked science and maths, working things out at the molecular level,” said Hanna, a keen footballer, who plays centre back for Linthorpe Women’s Football Club.
“Every three weeks I have a video call with Durham University, which has been great. Now I’m looking forward to exploring all the different areas of chemistry you don’t get to study at A level. Then, one day, I hope to work in the field of petro-chemicals or battery technology.
“It has been great at Conyers. I have friends who attend other schools and after talking to them I am really grateful to have come here.”
Students and staff at Conyers School celebrated another strong set of A-level and BTEC results, with 20 per cent of A-level and technical grades being awarded A*/A, and 52 per cent at A*-B.
The average technical grade was Distinction+. The results reflect two years of sustained effort from the students, supported throughout by the expertise and commitment of their teachers.
Head of Conyers School Chris Coleman said: “We are incredibly proud of our Year 13 students and everything they have achieved. They have worked hard, shown real perseverance and determination, and today’s results reflect that.
“Results are about much more than grades. They create real opportunities and open doors to what comes next. Our students leave Conyers ready for their next destination, be that university, an apprenticeship or employment, and ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
