Ancient Egyptian artefact displayed at Teesside schools
St Joseph’s RC Primary, Middlesbrough, and Billingham South Community Primary, Stockton-on-Tees became the first schools to receive real ancient Egyptian artefacts on loan from the British Museum. The North East schools were chosen by the British Museum and Middlesbrough Museums project.
Canopic Jar
The British Museum pilot sees artefacts loaned to schools to allow these ancient relics to be taken to communities that may not otherwise have access to these types of museums. The aim is to improve cultural experiences in these communities. The project was named British Museum in your classroom.
The item in question was an ancient Egyptian jar used in the mummification process. The canopic jar, once used to store body organs, was displayed alongside work by students.
Students were advised by experts on how best to set up their own Egyptian exhibition.
Vibrant Showcase
Nicky Jamalizadeh, Senior Standards Officer at Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust commented:
“We’re very proud of the staff and pupils at St. Joseph’s and they have been extremely excited about participating in the project with the British Museum in London. It was great to see the British Museum director Hartwig Fischer at St Joseph’s for the event. As part of the project the school hosted an exhibition of the pupil’s work on the Ancient Egyptians and in true St. Joseph’s style, the staff and pupils put maximum effort into transforming the school hall into a vibrant showcase. Pupils were in awe of the wonderful artefacts and a number of the pupils received curator training. The exhibition is memorable indeed and was enjoyed by many! The jar is now on display with other British Museum artefacts at Middlesbrough’s Dorman Museum.”
