Whinstone Primary School recognised as strong across four Ofsted standards
Whinstone Primary School in Ingleby Barwick is celebrating a year of achievement after Ofsted recognised the school as strong in four of the seven standards inspected, highlighting its inclusive culture, carefully planned early years provision and commitment to pupil wellbeing.

Part of Spark Education Trust, the 468-pupil school has also secured three awards over the past year: OPAL Platinum status, the NCCE Computing Quality Mark and the Heritage Schools Award.
Inspectors praised the school’s approach to early years education, highlighting how staff build relationships with children and their families before pupils even start school. This helps staff understand individual needs from the outset and provide a strong foundation for learning.
The report stated that “nothing is left to chance in the early years”, recognising the careful planning of indoor and outdoor provision, the development of children’s vocabulary and the focus on phonics, early writing and other essential skills. Children were also found to develop warm relationships with staff and be very well prepared for Year 1.
A culture where every child is supported
Whinstone was also judged strong in attendance and behaviour, inclusion, and personal development and wellbeing.
Inspectors highlighted the school’s inclusive culture, where every child is known, understood and supported, with provision carefully matched to individual needs.
The school’s broad range of experiences and opportunities was also recognised, including pupil leadership roles, community involvement and activities supporting wellbeing.
Pastoral support was identified as a particular strength, with pupils reporting that they felt safe, valued and listened to.
