Award-winning author David Almond opens new library at Kingsmeadow Community School
Kingsmeadow Community School ended the 2025/26 academic year on a high with the grand opening of its brand-new library, giving students plenty to look forward to as they returned for the start of 2026/27 this month.
The special event marked an important milestone for the school, with the modern library providing students with a welcoming space designed to inspire reading, creativity, and learning. The bright new facility includes comfortable reading areas, updated technology, and thousands of new books for students of all ages to enjoy.
Award-winning author David Almond, who has written dozens of books but is best known for his novel Skellig, was invited to unveil the ceremonial plaque.
Mr Almond said: “It’s wonderful to see a school investing in a space where young people can discover the power of stories,” adding, “libraries are magical spaces where imagination can truly come alive.”
The much-loved author, who has written dozens of books and graphic novels, shared his story about his aspirations to be a writer when he was a child growing up in Felling. He also congratulated the school’s work saying that “it touches my heart that you encourage students to flourish in their writing skills.”
Students listened eagerly as the author answered questions about his books, writing process, and inspirations. Many also had the opportunity to have copies of his novels signed after the ceremony.
Mr Barrett, Head Teacher described the new library as “a hub for learning and inspiration” and thanked everyone involved in making the project possible.
The opening celebration included readings by the Kingsmeadow Creative Writing Club members, and guided tours of the library. Pupils were especially excited to explore the shelves and settle into the comfortable reading corners for the first time.

Access to books, high-quality learning spaces and experiences which bring pupils into contact with successful writers and other role models all have a part to play.
“Kingsmeadow’s investment in its new library is therefore about much more than creating a new space. It is about supporting a culture of reading and learning which can help young people build confidence, develop their skills and think ambitiously about where their education could take them.”
