Sporting stars celebrate GCSE success at Our Lady & St Bede
Three talented young athletes are celebrating GCSE success today after balancing their studies with demanding sporting commitments at Our Lady & St Bede Catholic Academy in Stockton-On-Tees.

Whether representing Middlesbrough FC, competing on the athletics track, or playing semi-professional ice hockey, Dan, Nieve and Ben have all demonstrated the dedication, resilience and determination needed to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
A love of football has led Dan to pursue an unusual route into further education. Dan began playing for Middlesbrough FC Under-16s shortly after starting Year 9 at OLSB and has worked tirelessly to balance his academic studies alongside his football commitments.
After collecting his GCSE results today, the young sportsman plans to continue his dedication to the game by starting a BTEC in Sporting Excellence with Middlesbrough FC. His excellent set of GCSE results included a Grade 8 in PE.
To nobody’s surprise, Dan’s ultimate goal is to play professional football.
Headteacher Mo Wilkinson said: “We’ve been very proud to have helped Dan juggle his education and training, supporting him so he can follow his dreams. We’re looking forward to cheering him on in the Premier League one day!”
Also celebrating is elite athlete Nieve, who hopes her sporting journey could one day lead her to the Olympic Games.

Nieve achieved outstanding GCSE results, securing mainly Grades 8 and 9, including a Grade 9 in PE. The school’s Head Girl is already no stranger to success, having been named Northern Champion and qualifying to represent OLSB at the English Schools’ Athletics Championships.
The resilience and determination she has shown in balancing her sporting commitments with her studies has paid off, earning her the grades she needs to study Economics, Geography and Physical Education at Bede College, Billingham.
Her achievements have already begun attracting attention from universities across the United States, where sports scholarships could provide exciting future opportunities. Ultimately, Nieve hopes to earn a place with Team GB and represent her country at the Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, fellow student Ben Elliott has had to fit revision around a flourishing ice hockey career.

Ben regularly travelled to Leeds four times a week to train and compete with the Leeds Knights ice hockey team, while still keeping up with his studies at OLSB. Competing in the semi-professional National Ice Hockey League, his talent has seen him represent both the club’s junior and senior teams.
Ben first took up ice hockey more than ten years ago and has since developed into a highly talented player, competing both across the UK and internationally.
Today he celebrated a strong set of GCSE results, achieving all Grade 4s and above, including a Grade 6 in English Literature.
While he is still considering his next steps, Ben already has a clear long-term ambition: to compete in Europe’s top ice hockey leagues and live and play in countries such as Sweden, Germany, Finland or the Czech Republic, where the sport enjoys a huge following.
The success of Dan, Nieve and Ben highlights the remarkable talent within the OLSB community, with all three students proving that commitment, perseverance and passion can lead to success both in sport and in education.
