North East educators recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours 2026

The King’s Birthday Honours 2026 have recognised four remarkable individuals from the North East for their outstanding contribution to education.

This year’s honours once again shine a light on the dedication and expertise found across the education sector, and we’re delighted to celebrate those whose work has particular resonance with schools and trusts across our region.

Leadership in education across the region

Among those honoured is Alice Witherow, Chief Executive Officer of the Cheviot Learning Trust, who has been awarded an OBE for services to education. Leading a multi-academy trust spanning Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, she has played a central role in school improvement, leadership development and collaboration across schools in the region.

Another theme reflected in this year’s honours is the importance of inclusion and specialist support for learners with additional needs.

Caroline Tyerman, Lead Practitioner for SEND and Inclusion at Brougham Primary School in Hartlepool, has been awarded an MBE for services to education. Her work has focused on inclusive classroom practice and improving outcomes for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.

In recognition of their services to higher education, we extend our warmest congratulations to Dr Martin Raby, Principal and Chief Executive of The Northern School of Art, and Nigel Frederick Coates, former Director of the Business Clinic at Northumbria University.

Sector response

Commenting on the honours, Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “Across the North East, education professionals continue to demonstrate extraordinary commitment, resilience and expertise in some of the most important roles in public life.

“These honours are a fitting recognition of the impact they have every day on children and young people, whether through leadership, classroom practice, inclusion, or support services. We are proud to see colleagues from our region acknowledged in this way.”

A reflection of the strength of North East education

The recognition of these remarkable people in the King’s Birthday Honours 2026 is a reminder of the talent, leadership and commitment that exists across North East education. Their achievements reflect the sector’s enduring focus on improving opportunities across education and ensuring every learner is supported to achieve their potential.

Congratulations once again, Alice, Caroline, Martin and Nigel!
