The unsung strength of our school communities
School Business Managers and leaders are often described as the backbone of the school system, and in the North East, that couldn’t be more true. From managing complex budgets and overseeing HR processes, to procurement, compliance, estates, and school safety, SBMs hold together the operational fabric of our schools. Their work is rarely seen by pupils, but it’s felt in every classroom, corridor, and playground.
They are strategic thinkers, problem-solvers, negotiators, and leaders in their own right. And most importantly, they’re deeply committed to their schools, their colleagues, and the communities they serve.
We know that across our region, SBMs are working in increasingly complex and challenging environments, navigating rising costs, staffing pressures, and ever-changing policy landscapes. However, at the very same time, they continue to ensure our schools remain safe, efficient, and focused on delivering the best possible outcomes for children.
Their impact is profound, even when it goes unspoken.

NSBL Day is a chance to pause and reflect on something we sometimes take for granted: schools simply would not function without the expertise and dedication of their business leaders.
At Schools North East, we are genuinely grateful for the professionalism, resilience, and care that SBMs and operational leaders bring every single day to our schools and our communities. They are often the calm in the chaos, the problem-solvers behind the scenes, and the steady hands guiding schools through uncertainty.
In short, they are essential.
And in the North East, we are fortunate to have so many outstanding professionals who consistently go above and beyond.
The Most Valuable Players in education
This year, the importance of school business leadership is being further recognised through the upcoming The Education Business Conference (11 June, Vertu Arena), which will celebrate the sector’s “Most Valuable Players” in education.
We’ll bring together school and trust leaders, COOs, CFOs, SBMs, and operational professionals from across the country. It will be a chance to share practice, explore new ideas, and most importantly, recognise and celebrate the contribution of, indeed, education’s Most Valuable Players.
Grounded in the Department for Education’s Maximising Value for Pupils programme, the conference focuses on how strategic leadership in operations can directly improve outcomes for children and young people.
We’ll explore three key strands:

- Assets: Building environments that enable success
- Workforce: Strategic planning to maximise outcomes
Alongside this, there is a strong focus on developing confidence, capability, and professional judgement—ensuring leaders are equipped not just to manage complexity, but to shape and improve it.
