Hancock Gallery showcases incredible creativity from RGS Newcastle students

At Schools North East, we’re always inspired by the ways in which our region’s schools express their creativity. This month, it’s The Royal Grammar School (RGS) Newcastle taking centre stage, and we couldn’t be more excited!
Hancock Gallery, one of the North East’s leading contemporary art spaces, is hosting a special two-day exhibition of Year 13 students’ work from Friday 26 September. What a fantastic milestone.
A transformative learning experience
The exhibition, titled NEW HORIZONS, is a vibrant celebration of imagination, skill, and bold ideas. Curated in collaboration with RGS’s outstanding Art Department, the show features an exciting range of work—from evocative paintings to experimental installations, jewellery, sculpture, and mixed media pieces—each exploring complex, often deeply personal themes.
This collaboration is about more than showcasing talent; it’s about giving young people a professional platform and connecting education with the region’s thriving art scene. For students, exhibiting their work alongside world-famous names such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, Sir Peter Blake, and Salvador Dalí is not just an honour, but a transformative learning experience.
Opportunities like this inspire ambition, build confidence, and deepen a lifelong love of learning!
Unlocking potential beyond the classroom
Chris Morgan, Gallery Manager at Hancock Gallery, summed it up beautifully: “We’re thrilled to open our doors to these exceptionally talented young people. This collaboration is a natural extension of our mission to nurture emerging artists, and we hope visitors will be as inspired as we have been by the creativity and insight on display.”
This is the first public exhibition experience for many of the students involved, and it marks an important step in their artistic journeys.
Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “Partnerships like this remind us of the vital role schools play in unlocking potential and providing young people with experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.
“We look forward to seeing how this once-in-a-lifetime experience unfolds for all students involved. Best of luck.”
