Beyond Inclusion: Transforming SEND Support Post-Pandemic with BBCET

With a 50% rise in SEND numbers over the past two years, the Trust is meeting growing needs with innovation, collaboration, and a deep sense of purpose.
The power of early identification
One of the most striking developments is the Trust’s comprehensive approach to speech and language needs, an area heavily impacted by the pandemic.
With many children missing vital early interactions, speech and communication deficits emerged as a major challenge, especially in primary settings. In response, Bishop Bewick implemented universal screening at key transition points—Early Years, Year 3, and Year 7—leading to timely interventions and revealing hidden needs, particularly in older pupils.
Real results, real impact
This proactive work is paying off. Four out of five of the Trust’s secondary schools exceeded national benchmarks for SEND attainment in 2024. Perhaps even more impressively, they’ve had zero permanent exclusions for pupils with EHCPs for two consecutive years—an achievement that bucks national trends and speaks volumes about inclusive practice.
Supporting families, empowering staff
Recognising the broader context in which schools operate, the Trust is also focused on strengthening family partnerships. Schools are evolving into community hubs, offering parenting programmes and leading early help efforts traditionally managed by social services.
At the same time, teaching assistants—a vital but often overlooked group—are receiving tailored development and recognition through trust-wide training and specialist apprenticeships.
Strategic and sustainable SEND leadership
SEND leadership at BBCET is driven by clarity and consistency. A shared self-evaluation framework, regular peer-led reviews, and collaborative working ensure that every school aligns with core principles while retaining the flexibility to meet their community’s specific needs.
This blend of structure and autonomy is laying the groundwork for lasting impact.
Looking ahead to the future
The Trust is now exploring specialist pathways for pupils within mainstream settings and aims to expand their successful speech and language model into occupational therapy.
