Maximising Non-Teaching Position Recruitment Opportunities – Vickie Henry
It’s nationally recognised that it is becoming increasingly difficult to appoint into non-teaching positions. Salary and perception of working in a school are tough barriers which we need to breakdown, or rather ‘open’, in order to attract the RIGHT individuals for our schools.
When we think of important staff in schools, the focus will always be teaching staff. However, Admin, Catering, Cleaners, Learning Support and Technicians all play an equally important role in improving the outcomes of our students.
We need to start changing the conversation around these particular roles within schools; Admin work is not fluffy or pleasant or 9am to 3pm. It’s a 0715 start to sort staff absence and cover, and then 0800 to 1500 on a Main Reception with many irate parents. It requires resilience, adaptability and a strong personality.
By advertising for these ‘employability traits’ and a high ‘emotional intelligence’ we can ensure we’re attracting the right people to apply. From these applications, we then sift and interview for values – does the candidate in front of you demonstrate your school values? Never going to be 100% foolproof – since June 2021, I am currently on Admin 9 and 10 respectively due to attrition.
Don’t be afraid to pause before recruiting – it’s not necessarily a like for like replacement you need.
