‘A top secret celebration’ for beloved Dave, who has retired this term after 20+ years

Wednesday 17 July is certainly a date for the history books!

A ‘surprise alumni’ event in celebration of the retirement of Dave Atkinson (Outdoor Education & PE Lead at Barbara Priestman Academy), took place, and what a heartfelt occasion it turned out to be.

Dave has been on quite the journey while at BPA. After joining the academy in 2004 as a swimming instructor and later HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant), he sat some of his GCSEs alongside pupils before progressing to complete a Degree in Education, and then QTS (Qualified Teaching Status). And… breathe!

Of late, Dave has been a middle leader developing the vast outdoor space at BPA and leading a team of PE and Outdoor colleagues.

Over 50 ex-students and DofE award holders attended the event to honour Dave

A significant part of Dave’s role has also been leading the Duke of Edinburgh Award within the academy. During his time at BPA, he has led over 300 young people through the prestigious award – specifically the expedition section – with many reaching the Gold Award and even attending the palace to receive it!

Dave has led expeditions and residentials across the UK and throughout Europe, giving so many SEND young people the opportunities that they may not have otherwise had.

To mark his amazing efforts and achievements, colleagues at BPA organised a surprise alumni event which saw over 50 ex-students and DofE award holders attend the Forest School area of school, which has been transformed by Dave’s work.

Staff say it was fantastic to catch up with so many ex-students and to hear about their careers, social life, relationships, and much more.

Dave was presented with a long service award from the DofE regional team in recognition of the service and impact of his work on the hundreds of young people who have participated in the award.

In her speech, Carolyn Morgan, CEO, highlighted the ambition Dave has always possessed for young people, as well as his infectious enthusiasm, energy, and the huge legacy he leaves at BPA following his 20 years of service.

Dave is an outdoor enthusiast and is looking forward to spending more time on the water in his kayak, and out on the hills and lanes of Northumberland on both foot and bike. All colleagues and young people at BPA wish Dave the very best for his retirement, or, in Spanish: Felice Jubilacion!

The entire team at Schools North East would also like to congratulate Dave for his monumental achievements, and we hope his retirement is everything he wishes it to be.
