Building confidence, nurturing excellence: Newcastle High School for Girls appoints new Head

The new year is all about embracing a fresh start and smashing new goals. For Mrs Amanda Hardie, those two boxes have been ticked already!

We’re delighted to announce, on behalf of Newcastle High School for Girls, that Mrs Hardie has been appointed by the Trustees of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) as the new Head. Congratulations from all of us here at Schools North East.

A key part of the school since inception

Newcastle High School for Girls, which is one of 25 schools in the GDST,  is an independent all-through day school (for ages 3 – 18)  located in Jesmond and Sandyford, in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Amanda has been part of the school community since 1997. First at Church High School, and when that merged with the nearby Central Newcastle High School to form Newcastle High School for Girls in 2014, she was there to see it through!

This achievement made total sense, as Amanda has been a long-standing member of the Senior Leadership Team, (most recently in the combined role of Head of Junior School and Senior School Deputy Head Academic.

In addition to this,  Amanda Hardie has been Acting Head of NHSG since September 2023, and following a rigorous recruitment process, was appointed as Head with immediate effect. In this role, she’ll continue to champion girls’ education within the independent school sector.

Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: “Congratulations to Amanda. Newcastle High Schools for Girls is a brilliant school with a brilliant community, as she’ll already know, so to be appointed as the Head is a very exciting achievement and well deserved.

Speaking about her appointment, Amanda said: “I am delighted to be appointed as the new Head of Newcastle High School for Girls. Newcastle High is a wonderful community where every pupil is celebrated as an individual and enabled to be the best version of herself, every teacher a guiding force, and every challenge an opportunity to learn and grow.

“It is a privilege to lead this incredible independent girls’ school and I look forward to continuing to work with the amazing pupils, staff, parents and alumnae as we secure the future of Newcastle High as a beacon for excellence in girls’ education in the region and beyond.”
