South Shields School shows ‘considerable improvements in pupils’ progress and attainment’ says Ofsted inspectors
A South Tyneside school has received a glowing report from Ofsted inspectors.
On their most recent visit to South Shields School on Nevinson Avenue, inspectors reported that the head teacher has “provided strong and stable leadership through a period of exceptional change” and the school’s senior leaders and staff have a “clear vision for improving teaching” and are leading the school with “commitment and moral purpose.”
Ofsted noted that “Leaders and teachers provide extensive care for pupil’s welfare.” These improvements have “contributed to much better outcomes for pupils in 2018”.
Since the last full Ofsted inspection 18 months ago, inspectors observed that the school has made significant improvements to teaching. This has led to improved grades, with the proportion of pupils achieving grades 5 or above in English and maths doubling. Ofsted has now judged the leadership and management of the school as “Good”.
The report adds that the school has continued to improve support for pupils with special educational needs (SEND) ensuring that teachers have strong expertise and are implementing effective routines. In particular, middle leaders are working “increasingly well to lead change and check standards”.
Ms Allie Denholm said: “Everyone connected with the school is tremendously proud of the report we have received which we feel is a true reflection of the hard work put into South Shields School. I am delighted that Ofsted have recognised the stability that has been achieved when you consider the enormous pressure the school has been under since the decision was taken to close the school.”
“Whilst this report will not stop school closure, we will continue to fight tooth and nail to ensure every student receives the best education possible. I’m so pleased to see everything we have been working towards coming to fruition and look forward to seeing further improvements.”
