Summer Round Up: Policy Updates
There have been 22 policy updates throughout July and August – a very busy summer to say the least! SCHOOLS NorthEast has listed everything you need to know about what’s changing.
July 2018
- Vulnerability Report 2018. (PDF)The Children’s Commissioner publishes a new annual report showing how many children are growing up in families at risk
- School inspection handbook.Ofsted publishes the latest version of its handbook for the coming year along with an updated list of myth busters for schools
- Education in England: Annual Report 2018. (PDF)The Education Policy Institute publishes its latest annual survey showing school performance improving but the attainment gap still remaining
- The national funding formula for schools and high needs. (PDF)The DfE issues guidance for 2019/20 with a number of small changes including to underfunded schools and per-pupil levels
- Alternative Provision. (PDF)The Education Committee reports on school exclusions finding a number of unacceptable practices and calling for a Bill of Rights for both pupils and parents
- Government response on young people’s mental health provision. (PDF)The government confirms that it hopes to have some mental health support teams in place by the end of 2019

- SEND Exclusions – court ruling. Ruling on exclusion of pupil with autism has implications for all schools
- Energy Drinks Ban. Government proposes energy drinks ban for under-18s
- Memorandum of Understanding (PDF)Ofqual and the DfE outline how they intend to work together in such areas as regulation, reporting and information exchange
- Structural elements of quality early years provision (PDF)The Education Policy Institute reviews the evidence and finds the traditional virtues of smaller classes and trained staff all important
- Supporting the attainment of disadvantaged pupils. (PDF)The DfE publishes supporting evidence and a summary from its recent commissioned research into raising attainment for disadvantaged pupils
- Regional differences in attainment in early years. (PDF)The DfE publishes the results from a commissioned research report examining factors that help generate regional differences in early years
- Intergenerational index. (PDF)The Intergenerational Foundation publishes the results from its latest index of Wellbeing showing young people scoring poorly on economic, health and general wellbeing
- Secondary school choice and selection. (PDF)The DfE publishes commissioned research showing ethnic variation in both choice and access to schools with some groups notably missing out
- School leadership in an international context. (PDF)The DfE reports on a review of leadership practices and professional development in six high-performing countries including Singapore and Canada
- Guide to A/AS level results in England 2018.Ofqual publishes its guide and assorted Papers to inform this summer’s A’ level results day
- Teachers’ Awareness and Perceptions of Ofsted. (PDF)Ofsted reports on teachers’ views on Ofsted finding many believe their inspection had been fair but that it had involved a lot of extra work
- Guide to GCSE results 2018.Ofqual offers its guide to results, standards and grade boundaries for this year’s GCSEs in England
- GCSE: the main trends in entries and grades.FFT Education Datalab analyses the figures
- Good Childhood report 2018. (PDF)The Children’s Society publishes its latest research into the lives and feelings of children finding many struggling to cope with social attitudes and expectations
- The teacher labour market in England.The Education Policy Institute reports on teacher shortages especially in core subject areas calling for salary supplements to help alleviate recruitment problems
