The Northumberland Church of England Academy (NCEA) became the first school in the North East to accept pupils from birth, and the second of its type in the country, after launching a childminding agency - an Ofsted-approved government scheme.

NCEA Executive Director, Andrew Day and SCHOOLS NorthEast Director Beccy Earnshaw discussed the school's approach on BBC Radio Newcastle's 'Alfie and Charlie at Breakfast'.

The Children’s Commission on Poverty has published it’s findings on the impact of poverty on school life. Building on the Poverty Proofing model started by Children North East and the NE Child Poverty Commission, the research found that the average cost of sending children to state school is £800.

More than 400 school leaders from across the North East will gather at St James’ Park, Newcastle on Friday (10 October) for the annual SCHOOLS NorthEast Summit – this year themed as the ‘Big Questions’ Summit.

This week we learned that Ofsted will be making two day unannounced inspections within a two week window in September at around 40 schools nationally.

The official line from Ofsted is that schools will only be targeted with a no notice inspection where concerns have been raised about ‘safeguarding, rapidly-declining standards, the curriculum, leadership or governance.’

Music is booming in schools but poorer children may be missing out according to a new report by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Making Music, the most comprehensive survey of the learning, progression and teaching of musical instruments ever undertaken in the UK found that  76% of UK children aged 5-14 say they ‘know how to play an instrument’ compared with 41% in 1999
