A father of a child at Hadrian Park Primary School, in Wallsend, has written a heartfelt letter to his school to express how much the school has done for his family. The letter touched many senior leaders in the region and has been sent to Katrina Gueli, North East Regional Director of Ofsted.
This week we saw the first of the announced industrial action days from members of the National Education Union (NEU). Schools throughout the region took part on Wednesday February 1. The strike was the first for teachers in England and Wales since 2016.

Two multi-academy trusts are merging to create “a powerful force for good for education in the North East.” Northern Lights Learning Trust and Dayspring Trust combined on February 1st and will comprise seven schools and 3,093 children and young people, from the ages of two to 16.

A Sunderland primary school is singing from the rafters after winning the Sunderland Music Mark award for the second time. St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, which is part of Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, was awarded the honour from Sunderland Music Hub in recognition of its“commitment to providing a high-quality music education for all children and young people”.
The Healthy MindED Commission, powered by Schools North East, published The Voice of the Pupil: Understanding Mental Health in Schools in December 2022. This unique study, described by Commission Chair Professor Dame Sue Bailey as ‘unique’ and ‘representing the most important body of evidence about children’s own views about their mental health, wellbeing, and resilience ever carried out in the UK’, offers educators a new way to approach students’ mental health and properly understand the needs of young people in their schools.
A student from Galley Hill Primary School in Guisborough has published her own book at the age of seven. Sienna McLaren, currently in year three created the book, including the illustrations to raise money for charity.
