North-East Schools Recognised in Awards Shortlists

2nd October 2020

Schools in the North-East have been recognised across two virtual national awards.  The TES School Awards 2020 and the NASEN Awards 2020 have deemed seven schools in the region worthy of places in a variety of shortlists which include Primary and Secondary School of the Year.

Pennywell Early Years Centre have been shortlisted for The NASEN Award for Early Years Provision being cited as “a beacon of good practice in relation to provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities. The setting was judged to be outstanding by OFSTED in November 2018 for the fifth time in succession” and it is great to see their consistent high standard of excellence being recognised on a national scale.

The TES Schools are: Beaumont Hill Academy who have been shortlisted in Alternative Provision of the Year; Grange Park Primary School who are in the Creative School of the Year Category; two North East Primary Schools- Harrow Gate Primary and Staindrop CE Academy have been selected for Primary School of the year; Cleaswell Hill School’s SBM Anne Carruthers was shortlisted for SBL of the Year and Sedgefield School were shortlisted for Secondary School of the year and their Head Teacher David Davies was shortlisted for Head Teacher of the Year and was particularly proud of both of these accolades saying:

“In the context of the many excellent and committed Headteachers across the UK, being shortlisted for the TES Headteacher of the Year award is a very humbling experience. Like other Headteachers I don’t go to school each day to get such recognition, and in some ways to be singled out is a little embarrassing given that a Headteacher can only be successful because of the outstanding work of others, the staff team within his or her school. I am fortunate therefore to have not only made the shortlist for the TES Headteacher of the Year award, but the entire Sedgefield Community College team have eased my feeling of unease somewhat by also being shortlisted for the TES Secondary School of the Year!

The team at Sedgefield are a true credit to the profession and without doubt exceptionally talented, genuinely caring and infectiously positive people who share a determination to ensure that students enjoy coming to school each day and develop into fantastic young adults. Regardless of the outcome of the awards event, I know that there will not be a better staff team than that at Sedgefield Community College, and I am delighted that they are being acknowledged in this way and also proud to be recognised as Headteacher of such a wonderful school.”

All the schools shortlisted for the two awarding bodies are a testament to how hard North-East Schools work for their pupils and Schools North East are very proud to work in such a strong region and would like to congratulate Pennywell Early Years Centre, Beaumont Hill Academy, Grange Park Primary School, Harrow Gate Primary School, Staindrop CE Academy, Cleaswell Hill School and Sedgefield School.
