Newcastle school wins Hoops4Health Competition

14th March 2022

St. Teresa’s Catholic Primary School are celebrating after winning the Hoops4Health Competition in front of the Newcastle Eagles!

After beating St. Alban’s 4-0 in their semi-final clash, St. Theresa’s Year 5 team faced strong opposition in the form of Gosforth Middle School in the final.

Staged at half-time of the Newcastle Eagles match and in front of 3,500 fans, the teams took to the court for the final.

St. Theresa’s went 2-0 down early in the game, but they did not let this early set-back stop them from making a great comeback in the game and two baskets were scored by Aiden and Jamie to give them a slender advantage going into the final minutes of the match.

Subs came on to help keep the ball and gave the team some fresh legs to help with some important running and defending towards the end of the match.

When the final buzzer went, St. Teresa’s were delighted to be crowned Newcastle Champions for the first time in their history, winning 4-2!

Head Teacher said ‘A fantastic achievement from all our children. All of Year 5 had entered the competition at the group stages, with 23 teams in total competing and they should all be commended on their efforts and some very noticeable improvements through their time learning/developing both with the Eagles coaches and in our own PE lessons in school.

Thank you to Mrs Mackenzie for her time and effort on the night in coaching/encouraging all the team. It was a great start to our half-term holidays!’
