The Northern School of Art has partnered with students from North East schools to create a new exhibition entitled ‘Modern Makers’. The exhibition opened last week at The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle.
Modern Makers
The BA (Hons) Textiles & Surface Design degree staff and students from The Northern School of Art, in Hartlepool, have been working with The Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle on a brand new exhibition named Modern Makers.
It features design work including printed and embroidered textiles, artefacts and digitally printed scarves and banners. All of the work within the exhibition is based upon the museum collections.
Jayne Hemmins, Senior Textiles Lecturer at the Northern School of Art commented:
“We have collaborated with the following schools and colleges to enable younger artists and makers to engage from the wider community, as we are really passionate about schools engaging in art and design, as it enhances all aspects of learning as well as being really experiential and inclusive. The children we have worked with have created some wonderful artwork, which we have photographed and developed into huge scale (110cm x 5.5metre) textile banners, which will feature within the exhibition and will be a wonderful celebration of their achievements and creativity.”
The schools included in the project are Bader Primary in Thornaby, St Georges Academy in Darlington and Bishop Auckland College. The project also included The Northern School of Art’s Creative Kids Saturday Club, which includes local students ages 6 – 11 and Art, UAL Extended Diploma, Textiles & Surface Design students.

Schools North East worked with The Northern School of Art recently to deliver a webinar for schools to learn how to encourage their students into creative career pathways. It is clear from projects like ‘Modern Makers’ that the Art school continues to encourage creativity in the region. Congratulations to all those involved and we hope this project helps to inspire the next generation of local artists.”
The art exhibition will run until June 11. The Bowes Museum is situated in Barnard Castle, County Durham, DL12 8NP and is open every day from 10am to 5pm.
