Key Stage 2 attainment 24/25

The KS2 attainment data released today highlights the amazing work school staff in our region have done to support children. 61% of North East pupils reached the expected standard in reading, writing, and maths in 2024/25. This is the joint second highest in the country, a position the North East has consistently achieved since 2015/16. These results have been achieved against the backdrop of higher levels of long-term disadvantage, higher rates of absence, poor access to mental health services, and crumbling school buildings.

Absent Ambition: Addressing the root causes of school absence

Absence spiked across the board after school shutdowns during the pandemic, but while less serious cases have slowly started to abate, the worst cases are continuing to grow. This CSJ report sets out the root causes of these absences.

Listening to, and learning from, young people in the attendance crisis

Building on a 2023 study with parents, this new research listens directly to pupils. Through focus groups with 60 Year 10 pupils in schools across England, Public First and Impetus explored how young people think about school and the factors shaping their decisions to attend.
