St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy rated ‘good’ by Ofsted

10th March 2023

Congratulations to St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy on achieving a rating of ‘good’ following their most recent Ofsted inspection.

A caring school

The report described the school as “calm and harmonious” with the school staff having the pupils’ best interests supported ensuring that they are “safe and looked after.”

The leaders of the school were said to have made “the right actions to make further improvements” and ensure that their staff team is united with a commitment for ambition and excellence throughout the school.

High class teaching

Ofsted inspectors carried out deep dives in English, maths, science, history, and design and technology; and spoke to leaders about the PSHE curriculum and reading.

The school was found to have built a positive culture around reading with a dedication to building highly literate pupils who have a genuine love of reading.  There are “plentiful” opportunities for pupils to learn and use subject-specific and technical language. Younger pupils’ reading abilities are “swiftly identified” and, as a result of effective support, quickly learn to read fluently.

It is highlighted in the report that staff in the school “build strong relationships with pupils” who are proud to represent the school when contributing to the wider community through  leadership roles in school, for example, transition buddies and peer mentors. The inspection also found that pupils were respectful to school staff as well as their fellow pupils.

In the sixth form pupils were found to value their teachers’ expertise who were able to bring subjects to life. The report found that this in turn raised aspirations for those who were learning at this level.

Those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) were able to access the “same ambitious curriculum” and teachers “plan effective sequences of teaching that all pupils can access”.

On this result, Fran Craik, Executive Head Teacher of the school, commented:

“I am delighted on behalf of the whole school community that this report reflects our school community so well. We aspire for every girl to be the best version of herself, and provide a caring, warm and ambitious environment for all our students to flourish. St Anthony’s has a long tradition of providing excellence in all girls’ education in Sunderland, one which we are all very proud to continue.”

Chris Zarraga, Director at Schools North East added:

“This inspection result is a testament to the hard work of all staff who are a part of St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy. It is clear that the school is ambitious in supporting its students and that parents and children value the pastoral care and quality of education the school provides enormously.”
