14th Nov 2013

School Extension and Refurbishment Projects - An experience shared by the head teacher and the architect at Broom Cottages Primary in Ferryhill.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The session is suitable for Head Teachers, Building Managers and Governors who would like to gain the understanding and confidence to initiate and follow through a school capital project from first design ideas to completion. The session will share insights and knowledge gained by the school and the architect whilst working on this project and will give an overview over the design and construction process and what it involves. It will also give you an opportunity to see the completed project and spaces.

One year ago Broom Cottages Primary in Ferryhill was presented with a challenge: How to expand Early Years provision on a tight capital budget. The existing rooms for the nursery and reception classes in the 1960’s school were worn out, WC provision was inadequate and the school had committed to taking on an additional 13 nursery children.Something had to be done and Sean Kavanagh, the head teacher, decided to work with Kiosk Architecture & Design in order to tackle the problem. The result is a vibrant and exciting new learning and teaching environment with open, flexible and connected spaces at a construction budget of £150,000. A lot of the processes and stages involved in delivering this project were new to the school.

In particular we will be looking at:

  • How to start the process of design and work with an architect.·
  • Which people and services to involve during the design of the project·
  • How to tackle the sequence of processes and approvals required to progress a project to tender stage·
  • How to find a suitable contractor and keep your budget in check

THE SESSION WILL INCLUDE ·

  • A guided visit of the new spaces at the school by the head teacher and architect·
  •   An introduction to the project, the need for change, and the process of matching available budget with aspirations·
  •  A presentation on the design, tender and construction stages of the project and the lessons learnt from it·
  • A chance to share feedback and discuss findings·
  • Handout of checklist for building related projects in schools Sean Kavanagh is the head teacher at Broom Cottages Nursery and Primary School in Ferryhill, County Durham. Christoph Oschatz is an architect and Director of Kiosk Architecture & Design in Gateshead.Date:
