NHS Health Update for Schools

Dr Ewan Hunter and his colleague Professor Marieke Emonts will be joining us to discuss the current situation with Covid-19, Strep A and Scarlet Fever. As well as speaking on these hot-topics, Ewan will also discuss the work he is currently doing on tackling HIV-related stigma in various healthcare and community settings and the programme set up to help tackle this issue directly with young people in schools.

Dr Ewan Hunter, MBBS MRCP PhD MSc

Dr Ewan Hunter is a Consultant in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Dr Hunter’s specialist clinical interests include HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Tuberculosis, Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections, tropical medicine, care of prisoners in NE England with blood-borne virus infections.

Professor Marieke Emonts, Hon Professor Paediatric Infectious Diseases

Professor Marieke Emonts studied Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, in Leiden the Netherlands, before combining her paediatric infectious diseases and immunology training with a PhD in immunogenetics in Rotterdam. She currently works as a consultant Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology in the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, and combines her clinical work with local and (inter)national collaborative multidisciplinary clinical and translational research. Her work focusses on: 1. Improving diagnosis of febrile illness in children: how can we distinguish viral/bacterial and inflammatory causes; she is the cofounder of EUCLIDS and currently PI for PERFORM and DIAMONDS that also recruit patients with COVID and PIMS-TS. This work is funded by the European Union. 2. Improving treatment of infectious diseases by taking part in (non-)commercial randomised controlled phase I, II and III clinical trials 3. Improving care for cCMV across the region. A quick referral pathway for neonates with SNHL was initiated allowing prompt diagnosis and timely treatment for cCMV in neonates in Newcastle. Unfortunately this is not available everywhere, indicating inequality. Marieke is Curriculum Director for the Clinical Research programmes at Newcastle University. These online postgraduate courses (Cert/PGDip and masters) courses enable medics and NMAHP to train in Clinical Research. She supervises Mres, and PhD students, both national and international, and including medics and allied healthcare professionals.
