These practical sessions will give you the chance to explore the history of the region using maps and aerial photographs from our archives. We will show you how to trace changes in the historic landscape and give you a step by step guide on how to carry out a local history study using census data, trade directories and free websites. You’ll be able to research a street near your school and find out who lived there and what life was like. It’s easy once you know how!

We will give you the tools to enable you to carry out enquiry based learning activities based around a local heritage site, and showcase many of the school resources we have developed that are specific to our region and tailored to the new History Curriculum.

The training will include a free tour of the new exhibition “I Love This Place: North East England yesterday, today and tomorrow” at Bessie Surtees House, to help you rediscover the landmarks in our region. You’ll be able to see what has changed and what has stayed the same.

Teachers and heritage educators will receive a teaching pack at the end of the day which contains a set of maps and photos, a How To guide, access to 100s of free resources from our members only website, a downloadable local time line and a set of goodies for the classroom.

What teachers have said about this training
“Without a shadow of a doubt some of the best and most practical CPD I've ever been on. Thank you so much for organising it.”

“I came back to school and was eager to enthusiastically share what I had learnt that day with our history co-ordinator so all in all it was a very effective, informative and worthwhile CPD day for me. The opportunity and advice given was greatly appreciated.”

“I just wanted to say that I thought yesterday's CPD was brilliant - that rare combination of being both interesting and useful - thanks to all involved in making it happen.”
