Drugs Education this isn't me

31st Mar 2016

In 2014 the North East had the highest death rates from drug poisoning in the country.
There were 67 deaths involving new psychoactive drugs (NPS) - sometimes referred to as “legal highs”.

This one day programme is designed to help educate young people on the impacts of illicit substances on themselves and society.

THE POISON GARDEN TOUR
Myths and legends are uncovered alongside gruesome scientific fact and history. A combination of dark, ivy-covered tunnels and flame shaped beds create an educational garden of interest and intrigue. Here we tell of how these plants become killers in the hands of man.

In 2004 the Home Office granted The Alnwick Garden a licence to grow illicit substances. The Poison Garden provides the opportunity to witness the growing of cannabis, heroin, mephedrone (street name: M-Kat) and many more drugs in their most natural form.

SPIDERS ON DRUGS
In 1995, scientists working at NASA took a break from the usual cosmic research to tackle a much different problem: getting spiders stoned. Their experiments have shown that common house spiders weave their webs in different ways according to the psychotropic drug they have been given; the more toxic the drug, the more deformed the web.

NORTH EAST COUNCIL ON ADDICTIONS
NECA promote the prevention, recognition and treatment associated with the use and misuse of substances. Their central aim is to reduce physical, psychological or social harm resulting from vices such as alcohol, illegal drugs, and gambling.
A speaker from NECA will highlight the difficulties associated with drug addiction in the North East.

THE DEBATE
To conclude the day: debate structure packs will be provided to preface a thought provoking discussion amongst the children as to whether drugs in the United Kingdom should be legalised.
