BUILDING THE LEARNING POWERED CLASSROOM; Creativity and Innovation in the Classroom PARK VIEW SCHOOL GEORGE STEPHENSON HIGH SCHOOL Headteacher: Iain Veitch Headteacher: Ian D Wilkinson Since 2006 Park View Community School has been working to develop an innovative approach to learning that will help us to deliver education for the 21st Century. George Stephenson High School is at the beginning of this journey and shares our commitment to developing learning. The basis of the model of learning that Park View has adopted is Guy Claxton’s 4 R’s and having started in KS3 it now infuses all Key Stages. The focus is on developing the habits and dispositions for learning that will equip young people for the challenges of an uncertain future. It builds resilience and relationships, encourages reflection and enhances the ability to think and problem solve. The course provides the opportunity to explore the theoretical basis of Claxton’s work but also provides practical strategies on how to develop the approach within the classroom. This approach is explored in detail in Claxton's most recent book:The Learning Powered School, in which Park View is a case study This course is an excellent introduction to Claxton’s model of building learning power and is suitable for those practitioners whose focus is teaching, developing or leading learning. This is the course that provides opportunities to challenge your own thinking about learning and explore the ideas behind building learning power. It will also provide practical ideas to use in the classroom and with colleagues, and provide an insight into how it can change the learning culture of a school. The programme also provides access to the SSAT Virtual Learning Academy which offers a wealth of supporting research material and practical advice. Sessions will take place at Park View and George Stephenson giving delegates the opportunity to visit both schools and meet and work with a series of subject and senior leaders. The course is divided up into six sessions over 6 weeks, refreshments provided. • Learning is learnable • The Teachers Pallet • Theory into Practice • Working in a content rich subject, the infusion model • Planning lessons • Ofsted, Review, Reflection and Action planning for next step Breakdown of sessions Session Date Venue Facilitators Content 1 16/5 Park View Community School, Chester-le-Street Kim Cowie Deputy Headteacher, Park View Learning is Learnable • 4th generation learning – What do good learners do? • Staff and pupil views • The supple Learning Mind • Using your learning power to solve problems • You as a learner 2 23/5 George Stephenson Community High School, Killingworth Paul Arrowsmith, Head of Faculty, Southmoor Sally Rix, Curriculum Development, George Stephenson The Teacher’s Pallet • Teachers as Learners • Developing effective learner behaviours • Developing the learning power language • Modelling learning 3 30/5 Park View Community School, Chester-le-Street Kirsty Tate, Assistant Head, Park View Theory into Practice • Developing a multi-disciplinary approach at KS3 and an infusion approach at KS4/5 • Teacher behaviours that support the learning 4 13/6 Park View Community School, Chester-le-Street James Cooper, Head of Faculty, Park View Working in a content rich subject, the infusion model • The Infusion of learning habits and dispositions • Challenges and opportunities for the classroom 5 27/6 George Stephenson Community High School, Killingworth Paul Arrowsmith, Sally Rix Planning Lessons • Collaborative lesson planning • Building learning capacities into current lessons • Developing the learning power language 6 4/7 Park View Community School, Chester-le-Street Kim Cowie Review, Reflection and Action Planning for Next Steps • Revisit the theory • Review theory into practice • Question time • Action planning for Next Steps/Implementation Cost: £150.
