Case Study

The Sea Cadets Residential Block

Project Value: £500k / Project Duration: 28 weeks

Project Description
This was a greenfield site however the Sea Cadets still required to be in operation and we assisted this by housing their boats and assisted them when required for transportation. The structure is a traditional brick and block cavity construction with a precast block and beam first floor. Due to the nature of the existing ground conditions the foundations were piled and a Northumberland sewer had to be delivered to enable the structure to be located in the preferred position. All the windows are powder coated aluminium with electric roller shutters for security.

The Boat Station is the building that houses the boats, classrooms, and facility for teaching boat work.  First opened in 1986 as a Sea Cadet Boating Station, it has grown into a Centre of Excellence. With the addition of floating pontoons in 2009, thanks to The Peoples Millions, boating is now available to Units during Summer Evenings, where some local Units 'parade' once a week.

This facility provides stimulating training, adventure, and fun for the young Cadets. The new accommodation building can accommodate 20 Cadets, 8 Staff, and also has a disabled suite which can be used for up to three people. The Cadet accommodation consists of five four bedded rooms that allows segregation between male and female Cadets. The Staff accommodation rooms have en-suite facilities, while the Cadets have segregated communal washing and toilet facilities. On the first floor, there is a well-equipped galley which is available for use by visiting Units, and a dining/recreation room that has a 50-inch TV which can be used for presentations. It also has tea and coffee making facilities. There is also an office which has a computer and wireless internet connection.
