St Thomas More Catholic School - Refurbishment & Extension

Project Value: £2.25m / Project Duration: 48 weeks

Project Description
The construction of a second floor classroom block, on top of an existing two storey classroom block, comprising:

  • A structural steel frame with in situ reinforced concrete floor slab;
  • A single ply membrane roof covering;
  • Curtain wall glazing system extending from the new second floor level to ground level;
  • Zinc rain screen cladding system;
  • New stair and lift shaft block connected to the new facility;
  • Extension to the existing staircase from first to second floor level;
  • New M&E services, suspended ceilings, partitions, joinery works, flooring and decoration works to the new classroom block and stair / lift block;
  • Complete refurbishment of the existing ground and first floor level classrooms, offices, toilet facilities and circulation areas.
  • These works are being carried out whilst the existing two storey classroom block is occupied by, and in use by the school, and with the minimum disruption to the staff and pupils.
  • During the life of this project the Client has extended our scope of works at second floor level to provide two additional classrooms, and a number of further changes have been incorporated into our works as a consequence of unforeseen conditions encountered within the structure and fabric of the existing two storey building.

“We are very pleased with the current works at St Thomas More Catholic School. The communication is clear between the team at Meldrum and I. Having a large building project taking place at the heart of the school is always going to be challenging. Meldrum have proved themselves to be more than capable of meeting this challenge. I am kept up to speed on the works and enjoy a weekly walk around site to view

the project’s progress. We have a great relationship with Meldrum that also included a work experience programme for our pupils, one of these pupils is now an apprentice with them and is actually working at the school. I am pleased to have appointed Meldrum for this project: They are reliable, work with integrity and I look forward to continuing working with them in the future. Meldrum are our building company of choice.”               Jonathan Parkinson, Head Teacher
